In the heart of 16th century England, amidst the transformative waves of the English Reformation and the Elizabethan era, Rose Cockayne was born in 1540 in Bedfordshire. The daughter of Sir Chad Cokayne of Bedford and Lady Elizabeth Luke, Rose grew up in a family steeped in the traditions and responsibilities of the English gentry.

In 1567, Rose’s life took a significant turn when she married Baron Robert Spencer in Cople, Bedfordshire. This marriage was more than a union of two hearts; it was a binding of social and economic futures, a common practice among families of their stature. Together, Rose and Robert nurtured a large family, with children named William, Arnold, Cicely, Oliver, Ann, Elizabeth, Robert, Edward, Cecily, John, and Nicholas Spencer, each carrying forward the legacy of their lineage.

Rose’s era was one of profound change. The introduction of the Book of Common Prayer in 1549 and the Act of Uniformity in 1558 were not just religious reforms; they were societal markers that defined the era.
